Gangtok is usually reached via Bagdogra (IXB) — about 124 km / ~5 hours by road — or the nearer Pakyong (PKY)at ~40 km (currently limited flight operations). For Darjeeling and the hill railway experience, many travellers use New Jalpaiguri (NJP) station which is well connected nationwide. Always confirm road travel time when booking Sikkim tour packages, since mountain drives take longer than flat-route estimates.

The prime windows are March–May (spring/flower bloom) and October–mid December (clear skies and temperate weather). Visit late March–April for the Tulip/flower displays and spring blossoms in Gangtok. Festival lovers should plan around major Buddhist events (Losar, Saga Dawa, Losoong) — these offer cultural depth but can affect hotel availability and local transport.

 
Sikkim’s Buddhist festivals—Saga Dawa, Losar, Drupka Teshi, Phang Lhabsol, Bumchu and Losoong—feature vibrant Cham mask dances, music and monastery rituals. These events are culturally rich photo-ops and great for experiential travellers; however, book early since accommodations close to monasteries and festival venues fill fast.

This region offers mostly 3-star level services even where prices appear higher. Many hotels lack lifts, room heaters may be chargeable (₹300–500/night), hot water availability can vary, and power/water interruptions are possible in remote areas. Inform your operator in advance about mobility or medical needs so hotels can allocate suitable rooms (subject to availability).

Vehicles are assigned per itinerary and city-wise changes are common. Any unscheduled use (shopping, late dinners or added sightseeing) attracts extra charges (e.g., typical short-use fees). Upgrades are best booked in advance; on-tour changes depend on availability and may incur cancellation plus upgrade charges. Clarify AC use (switched off uphill) and rooftop carrier needs at booking.

Carry a valid photo ID for all travellers (Driving Licence / Voter ID / Passport). PAN/Aadhaar are not accepted as primary ID at checkpoints. For children, hotels follow strict age rules: children above 10 are charged as adults; ages 5–10 have CWB/CNB slab options; under 5 often stay free without an extra bed — always carry age proof. Pre-share medical or mobility requirements to avoid last-minute room or service issues.
